MATURING INTO CHRIST
IX. OBEDIENCE
Hebrews 11: 1 & 7 March 8, 2009

INTRODUCTION
As you read the Old Testament you are struck by the fact that God uses ordinary people to teach the truths He outlines in His Word. Ephesians 2:10. We are called to obedience, and the life of Noah is an example of obedience to God’s call on his life.

I. NOAH’S FAITH
Noah is the last descendent of Adam through Seth who lived in the world before the world-wide universal flood. According to Genesis 5 & 6, the times in which Noah lived were filled with depravity and rebellion against God. Genesis 6:6-7. Noah is obedient to God’s command, even though he has never seen a floor or rain. The work of building the ark takes a little over a century to complete. Noah does not question God, complain or procrastinate. Noah acted with pious care or concern, with faithfulness, as he built the ark.

II. THE WAY OF ESCAPE
Noah was called to build the ark, and to preach repentance and righteousness to the people of his day. Genesis 6:5. II Peter 2:5. But God delays judgment for 120 years. In this we see the Love of God for lost sinners. God was using Noah to prepare a way to escape the coming judgment as he warns his neighbors to repent. Noah keeps on building and preaching for 120 years. He is obedient.

III. THE DAYS OF NOAH AND OUR DAY
Noah’s day bears a strange resemblance to our day. God’s message was rejected in Noah’s day and it is certainly rejected in our day. Matthew 24:37-39. Noah’s righteous life and obedient faith-filled testimony shines in stark contrast to a wicked, cruel and depressing world. His holiness serves to condemn those who rebel against God. Maturing into Christ is demonstrated by our desire to be obedient to the revealed will of God found in Holy Scripture.
