MATURING INTO CHRIST
VIII. “MY SOUL, BE ON THY GUARD”
Psalm 51 & II Samuel 11-12 March 1, 2009
INTRODUCTION
David’s situation is a clear illustration of James 1:14-15. All the makings of a Hollywood movie are here. The Biblical warning of I Corinthians 10:12 underpins David’s sin. David, the man after God’s own heart, has fallen into deep and dark sin.
I. THE CIRCUMSTANCES OF DAVID’S SIN
For whatever reason, David decides not to go into battle as is the custom of kings. He sends his right hand man, Joab, to lead the fight. David has fallen into the grip of a cold heart. His own lusts consume his mind and thoughts. This is a time of neglected devotion. With lustful abandon, David plunges headlong into sexual immorality.
II. THE PROGRESS OF DAVID’S SIN
Notice the verbs in verses 3-5. David Saw. David sent for. Bathsheba came. David lay with her. He had allowed the weeds of sin to take root in his mind. Instead of getting out the weed killer, the allows it to take root, and, as it matures, it becomes too big to control. We see the same thing in Joshua 7 with Achan. Hebrews 10:25. Sin deceives even as it did in the Garden of Eden. The seeds of every known sin lie within our hearts. How do you avoid the allure of sin? Psalm 119:9-11.
III. THE RESULTING DISOBEDIENCE OF DAVID’S SIN
II Samuel 12. David is confronted by Nathan the prophet. If David had followed God’s Law, he would not have gotten into this sinful situation. Had he:
1) Guarded his mind with the Word of God;
2) realized the importance of the Law which is given to defend & protect us;
3) there is always forgiveness through confession & true repentance.
What does failure and success look like from God’s perspective? II Samuel 12:13. Psalm 32:1-5
