MATURING INTO CHRIST
I. Desiring Christian Maturity
II Peter 3:10-18 January 4, 2009
INTRODUCTION
In this new series we will look at various Scriptures relating to our growth in grace, our Christian maturity, our Sanctification. We will ask the question: What does it mean to become a mature Christian? Sanctification is a life-long continual process in which the lusts of the flesh are weakened and the desire for godliness grows in us. We are to persevere in this maturing process. I Peter 2:2. Long for, crave, growth in the fullness of our salvation. II Peter 3:18. I Thessalonians 3:12. II Thessalonians 1:3. I Timothy 4:7. Philippians 1:9. Hebrews 6:1.
I. GROW IN GRACE AND KNOWLEDGE
Grace is the key word in the New Testament. Titus 2:11. I Peter 1:18, The grace of justification. The grace of sanctification. We are to persevere in God’s grace. Running through the course of our lives is God’s grace, Peter says. His sovereign purpose and plan, every step of the way. Grace impels us to growth. Our growth is also in head and heart knowledge of the Lord. We are to know Christ more, as Prophet, Priest and King. We are to grow to resemble Christ.
II. CONSIDERATIONS
1. Spiritual growth is best seen when we are in the middle of life’s trials and struggles. We are to persevere in grace by keeping our eyes fixed and focused on Jesus.
2. Not all of us mature at the same rate. Sometimes growth comes suddenly, sometimes slowly.
3. Growth in grace is not automatic. It doesn’t come by osmosis. Growth in grace is to be a priority in the Christian life. Psalm 1. It will be in the trials of life that our maturity, or lack thereof, will be revealed.
4. Growth involves the body of Christ. We do not grow in grace in isolation. Matthew 18. We are to hold each other accountable.
The focus of our study is the question AM I MATURING INTO CHRIST?
