Sermon Notes:
“WHAT SHALL WE DO?”
VII. Expositions of the Book of Acts
Acts 2:36-41.
November 26, 2006
Introduction.
Peter says to the people that they are guilty sinners who have to face the consequences of their sinful behavior. He calls the people to repentance and faith because he loves them. And the Holy Spirit is at work as Peter preaches.
I. They are convicted of their sin. (vs. 37)
Notice that there is no attempt to blameshift, to evade or excuse their guilt. Under the conviction of the Holy Spirit they see the magnitude of their sin and condemn themselves for their actions. We who come to saving faith, must come the same way, acknowledging our sinfulness and guilt before a sovereign and holy God.
II. They must repent and be baptized. (vs. 38a)
Peter tells them how to deal with their sin and guilt: repent and be baptized.
Repentance = a turning away from a sinful and godless way of life. There are 3 elements to repentance:
1) confession of sin - recognizing the sin in my life;
2) sorrow for sin - grieving, mourning, over the horror of my sin; and realizing what it cost the Lord;
3)changing my life or lifestyle.
Baptism is a public sign and symbol of the believer’s new found faith.
III. They would receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. (vss. 38b-39)
The Holy Spirit would live in their hearts and empower them to live godly lives in Christ Jesus. We are not left to struggle on our own. Notice that this promise is for us and for our children, in fulfillment of Genesis 12 & 17.
IV. They are called to faith. (vss. 39b-41)
Notice the urgency in Peter’s words. He sees their plight and urges them to come to saving faith, to repent and be baptized.
What about you? How do you respond to the truth that you and your sin crucified the Lord of Glory?
